Voyage Summary

Each day of this expedition will reveal yet another aspect to the wonderful cultural diversity of Papua New Guinea and the breathtaking scenery unique to this remote land. This is still a land of magic and spirits despite the best efforts of colonial missionaries over the centuries. A land of 800 languages, the cultural diversity will take your breath away. From volcanic tropical fjords and the flooded crater that is Rabaul’s Simpson Harbour to pristine white sand beaches, the beauty of PNG is wonderfully varied.

Papua New Guinea Cultural Highlights
2011 Departure – March 23
On this 11 night expedition you’ll be enchanted by the rich culture and friendly welcomes of these exotic islands – from iconic handicrafts, pristine beaches and amazing diving to active volcanoes, ancient tropical fjords and the iconic Sepik River.

PNG Cultural Highlights – Australian Geographic Photography Expedition
2011 Depature – April 3
You will depart 3rd April 2011 for 11 nights exploring some of the most remote islands and coastal communities ever visited. This is a great opportunity to get right up close and personal with your camera in one of the world’s most photo opportunistic locations.

Photographers Nick Rains and Peter Eastway will be holding pre-shoot workshops on board before taking you on location with Orion’s expedition leaders. Capture unique compositions from dawn to dusk. Your workshops will cover seascapes, wide vistas and detailed macro flora and fauna. You will capture dramatic cultures and characters where your portrait skills and lighting sensitivities will get a work out. An epic photo shoot.

West Papua & Maluku – Voyage of Discovery
2011 Departure – April 14
“Remote” is an understatement for our anti clockwise navigation around Papua (previously named Irian Jaya) and over “the birds head” of West Papua. We will, on this “Voyage of Discovery”, witness completely mysterious ceremonies blended with the hues of a thousand cultures, from the islands and archipelagos and atolls that stretch from Rabaul, North West through to Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. The province contains the highest mountains between the Himalayas and the Andes, rising up to 4884 m high. The vast southern and northern lowlands, stretching for hundreds of kilometres, include lowland rainforests, extensive wetlands, savannah grasslands, and some of the largest expanses of mangrove forest in the world. Around the tip we visit Raja Ampat, an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals surrounding the four main islands. We then sail south to Maluku, a rarely visited group of islands.
