Cultivated tulips were first introduced to Holland in the late 16th Century by Carolus Clusius. Director of the Royal Medicinal Garden in Vienna, Clusius was the first person to successfully grow tulips in Europe. The Dutch climate provided perfect conditions for the tulips to bloom, and a thriving industry was born.

Quickly, tulips became an important commodity to the Dutch, symbolizing wealth and prominence with vivid majestic beauty. Those who dealt in selling tulip bulbs quickly became rich, and those who yearned to plant their own personal tulip gardens quickly departed with their riches. Even lower class citizens who couldn’t afford the high monetary value tulips were fetching bartered farm animals, food staples, and personal goods.

Today, the “tulip fever” that gripped the Netherlands so long ago still flourishes as tenaciously as the flower itself. Thousands of travelers flock from all the world over to witness numerous tulip varieties in gorgeously scultped gardens. Renowned sites such as Keukenhof Gardens provide spectacular discovery tours highlighting the history of tulips and their existence in Europe.

Melanesian Discovery
2011 Departure – March 7
Orion
embarks on a 16 night exploration of the South Pacific, through islands unspoilt by tourism. It will follow a unique itinerary, balancing authentic cultural experiences with comfortable luxury amenities and must-see sights with stops that no other cruise has access to. We’ll visit remote islands settled as early as 25,000 BC by skull worshipping tribes. Today they are some of the most dive-friendly islands in the South Pacific, rich in fish and brightly-hued corals. Stroll pristine white sand beaches, soft underfoot, and climb the side of a still-active volcano for an unforgettable view.

Voyage Summary
Open Video
Each day of this expedition will reveal yet another aspect to the wonderful cultural diversity of Papua New Guinea and the breathtaking scenery unique to this remote land. This is still a land of magic and spirits despite the best efforts of colonial missionaries over the centuries. A land of 800 languages, the cultural diversity will take your breath away. From volcanic tropical fjords and the flooded crater that is Rabaul’s Simpson Harbour to pristine white sand beaches, the beauty of PNG is wonderfully varied.

Papua New Guinea Cultural Highlights
2011 Departure – March 23
On this 11 night expedition you’ll be enchanted by the rich culture and friendly welcomes of these exotic islands – from iconic handicrafts, pristine beaches and amazing diving to active volcanoes, ancient tropical fjords and the iconic Sepik River.

PNG Cultural Highlights – Australian Geographic Photography Expedition
2011 Depature – April 3
You will depart 3rd April 2011 for 11 nights exploring some of the most remote islands and coastal communities ever visited. This is a great opportunity to get right up close and personal with your camera in one of the world’s most photo opportunistic locations.

Photographers Nick Rains and Peter Eastway will be holding pre-shoot workshops on board before taking you on location with Orion’s expedition leaders. Capture unique compositions from dawn to dusk. Your workshops will cover seascapes, wide vistas and detailed macro flora and fauna. You will capture dramatic cultures and characters where your portrait skills and lighting sensitivities will get a work out. An epic photo shoot.

West Papua & Maluku – Voyage of Discovery
2011 Departure – April 14
“Remote” is an understatement for our anti clockwise navigation around Papua (previously named Irian Jaya) and over “the birds head” of West Papua. We will, on this “Voyage of Discovery”, witness completely mysterious ceremonies blended with the hues of a thousand cultures, from the islands and archipelagos and atolls that stretch from Rabaul, North West through to Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. The province contains the highest mountains between the Himalayas and the Andes, rising up to 4884 m high. The vast southern and northern lowlands, stretching for hundreds of kilometres, include lowland rainforests, extensive wetlands, savannah grasslands, and some of the largest expanses of mangrove forest in the world. Around the tip we visit Raja Ampat, an archipelago comprising over 1,500 small islands, cays and shoals surrounding the four main islands. We then sail south to Maluku, a rarely visited group of islands.
